The episode starts with a recount of the last episode, repeating some important stuff like Marshall proposing to Lily, Ted meeting Robin and his mistake.

Plot

In the following text you will encounter spoilers for this episode!

The name of the episode of Purple giraffe is because a kid crawled into a crane machine for a purple giraffe and robin had to report on it for her work. Ted runs to the location to ask if she wants to come to his appartment for a party he organizes for her without telling her it is for her because he wants to keep it casual.

Barney wants to talk it out of Ted's head and tries to convince him unsuccesfully to sleep with some random hot woman nobody knows on the party. According to him there is always one girl on parties in New York that doesn't know who's party shes on.

Meanwhile, Marshall has a paper to write for his lawschoolthing but because he just got engaged with Lily, the only thing she wants to do is making love to Marshall. That ofcourse makes him not work on his paper.

At the party, Barney finds the one girl who nobody knows, asks Ted if he wants to flirt with her and later make love to her, but he declines so he takes her to the roof to do you know what.

We later find out that she didn't come to the party, the following day Robin calls Ted to say she is sorry for not attending the party because she was stuck at work.(We also get to know that the kid that got stuck in the crane machine got to keep not only the purple girrafe for which he crawled into the machine in the first place but all the toys in the machine because kids "have small bladders"!)

Because Robin did not come, Ted does another party the same day. Barney uses the "Tedmove" to dump this girl he met yesterday (the Tedmove is saying Iove you to the girl you met just yesterday). Robin ofcourse doesn't show up again.

So ted throws a third party for her. The girl Barney hooked up with on the first party shows up again. Marshall is looking for "a big ass book". Marshall finds it, and sees that there is  a cup on the book grabs it and starts a rant about he is jeperdazing his law carreer so Ted could throw for a girl he just met, on that very moment we see that the door is open, in the dooropening standing is Robin. Ted quickly makes up an excuse that he wanted to introduce her to this guy (named Carlos, connected to Barney's hookup).

Those 2 kinda hit off, and they go on the roof, after a while Ted goes up too and talks to Robin, they decide to stay friends because there is no offswitch to love.

They all go to the bar and drink beer together.

Commentary

The note is set people, we are officially ongoing in 9 seasons of how I met your mother. The set up will kinda always be the same but other stuff other hookups for Barney.

But I find it a bit painfull to see Ted running after a carrot that he is never going to catch. But Robin is kinda nice for sticking around. Not many people actually do this, let alone in a friendship where there is a slight bump in the beginning of the road.(which this essentially is in the storyline.

We also see some of Barney's character and Liliy's need for love from Marshall. We will certainly see more of that.
